Breitbart Sports recently talked with Bas about his Hall of Fame career. When they asked him about his top in-ring moment he mentioned his rematch with Pancrase’s co-founder, Masakatsu Funaki, as the pinnacle. In their first bout Funaki gave Bas his first of only four professional losses by a Toe Hold Submission that near snapped his ankle off.
Frank Shamrock hailed Funaki as “the golden boy” of Pancrase. He is the only person to ever beat both Shamrock brothers and Bas in their career. Josh “The Warmaster” Barnett even called him “the symbol of Japan.”
One of Bas’ greatest learning experiences is shown below.
After the loss Pancrase waited to give Bas the rematch against Funaki until the last fight on his contract. They thought Funaki would beat Bas again. A loss in the rematch meant that Pancrase would have leverage in future contract negotiations.
Bas gained his revenge in an entertaining fight that saw Funaki refuse to quit despite taking severe punishment from Bas.
Check out the rematch below.
