Bas Rutten Invented the Superman Punch

| November 1, 2017

The superman punch, now a legitimate part of any MMA fighter’s arsenal, was first seen used by legendary fighter Bas Rutten.   What is the superman punch? It’s called a Superman punch because the person throwing it is momentarily suspended in mid-air with nothing connecting them to the ground. The technique involves bringing the rear leg forward to feign a kick, then snapping the leg back while throwing a cross, resulting in greater power behind the punch.

Bas was the first to use this in competition back in 1999 vs Randleman.  Since then it has been used across other sports such as hockey and WWE wrestling.  Another innovation by Bas that lives on today!

Here is a great article about the superman punch and some examples of how to throw it and it being used in hockey: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/kevin-bieksas-superman-punch-unique-risky-hockey/
