Bas Rutten: MMA Legend and All-Around Good Guy

| December 17, 2012

Screen Shot 2013-06-03 at 8.00.06 AMDutch-born mixed martial arts fighter Bas Rutten has loved his craft since the age of 12, when a Bruce Lee movie set him on the path to his dream. Since then he’s earned titles such as the three-time King of Pancrase, Dutch Muay-Thai Champion, and UFC Heavyweight Champion.

The MMA legend has also earned the respect of MMA fighters worldwide. In addition to training MMA instructors and the military’s Elite Special Forces, he also takes a stand for healthy diets among children and promotes healthy living to anyone and everyone who will listen.

Rutten’s love for his life shine through every sentence he utters in this film, especially the ones where he talks about the care his parents showed him growing up (though they did try to stop him becoming a fighter!) as well as his wife’s support later on. In fact, she was the one who predicted he would become huge in Japan and eventually join the television business in the United States.

Rutten optimistically describes his life as a continuous uphill trajectory, while never forgetting his roots. So does he have any advice for people with a dream? Oh, yeah. His words of wisdom are, he says, what have gotten him through: “Never give up.” With an attitude like that, it’s no wonder Bas Rutten is a success story today.
